The design for the new Embassy of Australia stands as both an integral civic space and an enduring symbol of Australia. The design honours the legacy of its predecessor built on the very same site and continues the special relationship between allies, partners and friends.
Located at the heart of the U.S. capital, the embassy remains contextually respectful of Capitol Hill’s predominant architectural style, completing Scott Circle and addressing the street axes to 16th Street and the White House and Massachusetts Avenue, commonly referred to as Embassy Row. The design acknowledges the site&#8217;s transition from the predominantly residential urban realm to the north and the more commercial to the south.
The building’s transparency manifests the inherent Australian values of welcomeness and trust, while the interior’s expansive atmosphere is representative of the vastness of the Australian landscape, evoking a sense of something greater than ourselves, carved out through the enormity of time.

At the heart of the building, a large atrium serves as an organising and orientating space displaying a powerful connection between the ground and the sky. This central atrium gives rise to an axial arrangement of representational spaces where every visitor is granted an equally immersive experience. A key element of the design is the staff hub – a series of breakout spaces vertically linked by a feature stair within the controlled access zone, encouraging staff to move easily between departments and social spaces. Open and equitable workspaces with ample daylighting promotes a calm and ordered atmosphere. The U-shaped plan and side core arrangement ensure efficient floorplates, allowing departments to adapt to changing requirements.
Acting as the threshold to the formal and ceremonial areas, a waiting room celebrates Australian furniture designers and First Nations artists with an arrangement of bespoke furniture and speciality rugs.
The display of Australian artworks emphasise the nation’s artistic excellence, rich indigenous heritage, and depict stories of vibrant diaspora communities. The selection and commissioning process for the works was guided by the Australian Government&#8217;s cultural policy pillars of supporting artists, creating a space for diverse voices, prioritising First Nations representation, and ensuring a meaningful and engaging experience for all visitors.

Specialty rugs based on First Nations artworks define a series of key spaces, creating an inviting space for cultural exchange. Through close collaboration with Aboriginal artists and their representatives, a unique design process involving the artists, interior designers and rug manufacturers captured the unique essence of each selected artwork, which was translated into captivating hand-tufted wool rug designs.
The building’s interiors are complemented by selected furniture showcasing leading Australian artists, designers and manufacturers. Incorporating both contemporary and historically significant designs, such as the re-interpretations of iconic Robin Boyd designs, the furniture selection celebrates the essence of Australian design. Crafted using sustainable materials and finishes, the pieces embody a future-forward aesthetic and informality.

<h3>The landscaped hospital campus incorporates a 96-key hotel, retail and childcare centre, supermarket, and conference centre alongside two refurbished research and administrative buildings.</h3>

Reflecting changing healthcare practices, workplace patterns, user expectations, community aspirations and environmental responsibility, we created a health model that revolves around patients using nature-focused architecture.
At the hospital’s heart is the six-storey ‘Main Street’, an open, light-filled internal street that brings all the elements of the hospital together and integrates with the parkland beyond, allowing the energy of the city at one end and the park at the other to flow through the building.

Patient bedroom designs include three zones (clinical, patient and family) that respond to the emotional needs of children and help enhance patient experience and recovery rates. With more than 85 percent of rooms designed for single occupancy, children can personalise their space and feel their bedroom is a safe and personal haven.
ESD features are a strong design component, including solar panels, orientation, volatile organic compound free materials, efficient water collection, treatment and reuse, efficient lighting, heating and cooling, VOC-free and recycled materials and 5 Green Star status. The hospital also has 500 bike parking spaces.

The hospital offers a tranquil and caring environment for staff, patients and visitors through the integration of architecture, landscaping, health planning, evidence-based design and artwork by local Bendigo artists.
Inspired by Bendigo’s architectural vernacular and natural environment, the design considers the building and landscape as an integrated whole in a holistic approach to healthcare. The built form reaches out into the garden setting, while the landscape is drawn in to create internal sanctuaries.
A rooftop garden and native trees within the hospital entrance enhance the biophilic ethos of the building, while the increased reflectivity of the building’s glass façade reflects the surrounding natural landscape.

Inside, a bespoke woven timber ceiling creates a pattern that filters daylight providing ever-changing dappled light. The use of timber and quality of light provides a sense of warmth and helps to increase wellbeing.
Incorporating the latest design and technology solutions in a tranquil and caring environment that considers the needs of patients, staff and the community, Bendigo Hospital is a key milestone for Central Victoria and will service the region well into the future.

Walmer is a luxury residential development uniquely positioned on the bank of the Yarra River delivering a resort-style, nature-influenced experience for residents.
The sustainable and responsive building for Salta Properties is designed as an extension of this exceptional natural setting and is mediated by deep eaves eroded at key moments to create unexpected, framed views.
Residences prioritise passive solar performance with full-height, double-glazed windows that maximise access to northern light and offer spectacular views of the Yarra River and Studley Park. Spacious balconies wrap the entire edge of the apartment creating multiple opportunities to experience the outdoors, while providing privacy from below. Walmer’s 61 generously appointed residences are fitted with crafted joinery, natural stone benchtops and timber floorboards.

Walmer features an internal porte-cochère entrance and communal amenity including a residents lounge, dining room and climate-controlled room for wine tasting and storage. The building embraces health and wellbeing with a gym, spa, sauna, treatment room, and a 25-metre swimming pool aligned with the river, along with superb access to walking, running and cycling. Sounds of nature pervade every experience, with the gently moving river and native birdsong creating a therapeutic environment.
The efficient building envelope adapts to outside conditions to reduce its reliance on energy for heating, cooling and lighting, and has achieved a 6 Star Energy rating. Rainwater harvesting alongside water-efficient fixtures also help achieve a 6 Star Water rating.
A mix of commercial spaces opening onto Walmer Plaza activates the development along the bustling Victoria Street intersection.

<h3>The Gandel Wing is a next generation treatment centre featuring leading-edge technology, urban amenity and modern design to serve patients’ needs into the future.</h3>

The new seven-storey wing has three levels of basement carparking and a radiotherapy bunker, providing an additional 110 beds. The facility provides treatment cancer, cardiac, emergency, geriatric care, infectious diseases and maternity services.
The design uses salutogenic principles to create spaces that soothe the spirit and promote positive healing and wellness, rather than simply treating disease. Patients are more closely connected with nature through full height operable windows and natural light, while also experiencing new levels of comfort and control through state-of-the-art technology, which relieves patient burdens and increases safety.
Outside, the natural slatted terracotta façade complements the adjacent 60s brickwork of the original hospital, uniting the site into a harmonious and identifiable health campus. The façade folds to create a gentle quality of light inside and ensure patients’ views from beds are unobstructed while providing screening.

The Frankston Hospital Redevelopment represents the Victorian Government’s largest ever health infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s south-east, with plans for it to become a world-class public hospital and new benchmark of care for Peninsula Health.
The comprehensive scope of work includes architectural, interiors and masterplanning components that address the fundamental challenge of unlocking the site and connecting its existing assets to new buildings, while embedding flexibility to allow for future expansion.

The architectural design of the new facility’s 12-storey tower and podium form part of a composition of elements that respond to the adjacent parklands and local coastal context of the peninsula with its massing, rusticated façade, palette of natural materials and landscaped interventions. A new main entrance is also crowned by a generous sculptural verandah that evokes the coastal setting.
The masterplan balances site constraints and unifies the campus by linking the extensive green spaces, defining the new entrance, integrating the facility with the existing hospital and delivering a canopied ‘hospital street’ to seamlessly connect east and west.
Plans will further transform the hospital by delivering an additional 130 beds, 15 new operating theatres, new spaces for mental health and oncology services, as well as expanded women’s and children’s services. The addition of new wards and points of care will increase capacity to treat approximately 35,000 more patients each year.

<h3>Australia’s slimmest tower and fourth in the world by aspect ratio is an elegant residential building which demonstrates how viable small sites can be.</h3>

The site included a three-storey 1908 Art Nouveau building. The tower is sensitively setback from the heritage façade, reinstating the decorative grandeur of the original features and creating a landmark building, both at street level and on the skyline.
Innovative thinking was applied across all aspects of the project. The design uses a self-supporting ‘H-frame’ wall solution, which moves the structural core to the perimeter and enables floorplates to be column free. This let the height and slenderness of the tower to be maximised.
Air rights purchased from the adjacent property, allows the building to cantilever 4.5-metres, creating unobstructed views.
A prefabricated system was also developed, in conjunction with 4D Workshop and Hickory, and 472 prefabricated modules were craned into place.
With the limitations of a 480sqm footprint – roughly the size of a netball court – and a heritage frontage, Collins House required some inventive thinking. Australia’s slimmest tower, and fourth in the world by aspect ratio, is an elegant residential building which demonstrates how small sites can be viable.

Overall, the project incorporates 259 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and impressive amenities including Collins Terrace and St James Club, in addition to a barbecue, media room, sports bar, private dining spaces, kitchen, and gymnasium.

Bates Smart worked with HINSW and Silver Thomas Hanley to design the new major referral hospital for the Tweed-Byron region. The new hospital spans seven levels and delivers 499 new beds. As New South Wales’ first significant regional hospital redevelopment, it delivers a life-changing healthcare solution for the area’s growing population.
The staged hospital precinct masterplan resulted from collaborating closely with community focus groups and stakeholders. It sets out flexible and suitably scaled development lots that can be further developed into a wider health and education precinct.
The hospital is embedded in the physical topography of the site. Its position on a north-facing ridge maximises natural light and views from the mountains to the coastline. Patients, staff and visitors are always connected to the landscape via circulation pathways that promote wellbeing and healing.

The architectural expression is made up of three distinctive typologies. Quadrant anchors, a recessive core and surrounding granular forms come together as a collection of objects in the landscape.
The façade materiality works to distinguish building forms from one another. Earthy pigmented masonry and profiled metals are durable and reference the site’s agrarian history.
The project also includes the design of two Health Hub pavilion buildings that provide ancillary health and education services within the hospital’s pedestrian focused town centre.
