Intrigue and surprise bring a heritage building to life

Whisky Thief

Whisky Thief is a spirited whisky bar nestled at the rear of Prefecture 48.

Its copper-clad bar and moody interiors evoke Japan’s whisky heritage, while hidden details and bold design moments invite guests on a journey of surprise and intrigue.

The bar occupies a double-height space at the rear of Prefecture 48’s heritage Foley Brothers warehouse, providing a striking contrast to the more intimate restaurants.

The copper-clad bar, inspired by traditional whisky stills, forms a glowing focal point that anchors the space. Textured timbers, soft lighting, and custom lounges upholstered in tattooed fabric referencing Japan’s Yakuza culture create a warm, edgy atmosphere.

Drawing on Japanese folklore, historic whisky distilleries, and immersive art, the design integrates hidden, playful details – from fingerprint-activated whisky cabinets for storing rare bottles, to lamps shaped like melted ice cubes, and a “stolen” whisky stash revealed in the bathrooms.

Whisky Thief adds a distinct narrative of craftsmanship, mystery, and intimacy to the vibrant Prefecture 48 precinct.
