A Melbourne-Inspired Duty Free Experience
Lotte Duty Free, Melbourne Airport
The Lotte Duty Free store within Melbourne Airport Terminal 2 Arrivals, offers a refreshing retail experience that celebrates the city’s unique laneway culture and iconic street art.
Drawing inspiration from Melbourne’s streetscapes, the new design incorporates red brick, concrete-render finishes, cobbled pavement, vertical retro lantern signage, inlaid brass plaques and graffiti-inspired artwork by prominent artists including Steen Jones, Tom Civil, Meggs and George Rose.
The Arrivals store has been carefully created to reflect the mindset of travellers upon landing. The retail space crosses two sides of the concourse. The beauty section adopts a warmer palette, allowing individual brands to stand out within a neutral palette. In contrast, the liquor section is designed with a moody, industrial aesthetic, emulating the ambiance of a CBD bar. Additionally, the space incorporates a ‘click and collect’ lockers for convenience.
Given the 24/7 operational environment of the airport, material selections are robust and durable to withstand continuous foot traffic and facilitate partial cleaning throughout the day and night. The strategic positioning of product displays ensures they attract travellers into the retail space without hindering their journey to immigration and baggage claim.
Compliance with airport-specific building controls has been imperative, with the design meeting strict airside security measures. Construction was phased over multiple stages to minimise disruptions to travellers, allowing Lotte to continue trading at reduced capacity during the process.
The Lotte Duty Free store within Melbourne Airport follows the successful delivery of the Lotte Sydney flagship store.
