<p>The design for the new Embassy of Australia stands as both an integral civic space and an enduring symbol of Australia. The design honours the legacy of its predecessor built on the very same site and continues the special relationship between allies, partners and friends.</p>
<p>Located at the heart of the U.S. capital, the embassy remains contextually respectful of Capitol Hill’s predominant architectural style, completing Scott Circle and addressing the street axes to 16th Street and the White House and Massachusetts Avenue, commonly referred to as Embassy Row. The design acknowledges the site&#8217;s transition from the predominantly residential urban realm to the north and the more commercial to the south.</p>
<p>The building’s transparency manifests the inherent Australian values of welcomeness and trust, while the interior’s expansive atmosphere is representative of the vastness of the Australian landscape, evoking a sense of something greater than ourselves, carved out through the enormity of time.</p>

<p>At the heart of the building, a large atrium serves as an organising and orientating space displaying a powerful connection between the ground and the sky. This central atrium gives rise to an axial arrangement of representational spaces where every visitor is granted an equally immersive experience. A key element of the design is the staff hub – a series of breakout spaces vertically linked by a feature stair within the controlled access zone, encouraging staff to move easily between departments and social spaces. Open and equitable workspaces with ample daylighting promotes a calm and ordered atmosphere. The U-shaped plan and side core arrangement ensure efficient floorplates, allowing departments to adapt to changing requirements.</p>
<p>Acting as the threshold to the formal and ceremonial areas, a waiting room celebrates Australian furniture designers and First Nations artists with an arrangement of bespoke furniture and speciality rugs.</p>
<p>The display of Australian artworks emphasise the nation’s artistic excellence, rich indigenous heritage, and depict stories of vibrant diaspora communities. The selection and commissioning process for the works was guided by the Australian Government&#8217;s cultural policy pillars of supporting artists, creating a space for diverse voices, prioritising First Nations representation, and ensuring a meaningful and engaging experience for all visitors.</p>

<p>Specialty rugs based on First Nations artworks define a series of key spaces, creating an inviting space for cultural exchange. Through close collaboration with Aboriginal artists and their representatives, a unique design process involving the artists, interior designers and rug manufacturers captured the unique essence of each selected artwork, which was translated into captivating hand-tufted wool rug designs.</p>
<p>The building’s interiors are complemented by selected furniture showcasing leading Australian artists, designers and manufacturers. Incorporating both contemporary and historically significant designs, such as the re-interpretations of iconic Robin Boyd designs, the furniture selection celebrates the essence of Australian design. Crafted using sustainable materials and finishes, the pieces embody a future-forward aesthetic and informality.</p>

<p>The Frankston Hospital Redevelopment represents the Victorian Government’s largest ever health infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s south-east, with plans for it to become a world-class public hospital and new benchmark of care for Peninsula Health.</p>
<p>The comprehensive scope of work includes architectural, interiors and masterplanning components that address the fundamental challenge of unlocking the site and connecting its existing assets to new buildings, while embedding flexibility to allow for future expansion.</p>


<p>The architectural design of the new facility’s 12-storey tower and podium form part of a composition of elements that respond to the adjacent parklands and local coastal context of the peninsula with its massing, rusticated façade, palette of natural materials and landscaped interventions. A new main entrance is also crowned by a generous sculptural verandah that evokes the coastal setting.</p>
<p>The masterplan balances site constraints and unifies the campus by linking the extensive green spaces, defining the new entrance, integrating the facility with the existing hospital and delivering a canopied ‘hospital street’ to seamlessly connect east and west.</p>
<p>Plans will further transform the hospital by delivering an additional 130 beds, 15 new operating theatres, new spaces for mental health and oncology services, as well as expanded women’s and children’s services. The addition of new wards and points of care will increase capacity to treat approximately 35,000 more patients each year.</p>

<p>Bates Smart worked with HINSW and Silver Thomas Hanley to design the new major referral hospital for the Tweed-Byron region. The new hospital spans seven levels and delivers 499 new beds. As New South Wales’ first significant regional hospital redevelopment, it delivers a life-changing healthcare solution for the area’s growing population.</p>
<p>The staged hospital precinct masterplan resulted from collaborating closely with community focus groups and stakeholders. It sets out flexible and suitably scaled development lots that can be further developed into a wider health and education precinct.</p>
<p>The hospital is embedded in the physical topography of the site. Its position on a north-facing ridge maximises natural light and views from the mountains to the coastline. Patients, staff and visitors are always connected to the landscape via circulation pathways that promote wellbeing and healing.</p>

<p>The architectural expression is made up of three distinctive typologies. Quadrant anchors, a recessive core and surrounding granular forms come together as a collection of objects in the landscape.</p>
<p>The façade materiality works to distinguish building forms from one another. Earthy pigmented masonry and profiled metals are durable and reference the site’s agrarian history.</p>
<p>The project also includes the design of two Health Hub pavilion buildings that provide ancillary health and education services within the hospital’s pedestrian focused town centre.</p>

<p>Linking the two towers is a two-level podium or ‘retail loop’, which takes advantage of the level changes between Toorak Road and Chapel Street, creating new a luxury shopping experience.</p>
<p>LK Tower brings together three interlocking elliptical forms that step and change as the building rises. The elegant and slender design creates a dynamic composition, with light and shadow play altering with perspective and weather.</p>
<p>The mass of the tower reduces at the top to create an iconic landmark. The final four floors are whole-floor penthouses with 360-degree views across Melbourne.</p>

<p>Meticulously crafted from beautiful materials, all apartments are generous in scale and proportion. Exceptional amenities include elevated gardens and an exclusive club lounge which provides a sanctuary in the heart of this metropolitan neighbourhood.</p>
<p>A 25-metre indoor pool extends into the large garden on the roof of the podium, where a series of pavilions, sundecks, and lush planting, all contribute to an atmosphere of calm contemplation.</p>

<h3>An exclusive enclave within the Fitzroy Gardens precinct, Classic East Melbourne encompasses three luxury residential buildings overlooking the gardens and Yarra Park.</h3>


<p>Significantly, the development includes the restoration of the historic 1882 Mosspennoch House, which has been transformed into six prestigious apartments. Adjacent to Mosspennoch House, a seven-level building faces the Fitzroy Gardens—one of Melbourne’s most beautiful parks—and features 12 luxury apartments.</p>
<p>Complementing these residences is a 14-storey building, accessed via Wellington Parade, which incorporates 51 apartments with spectacular views towards Yarra Park and the iconic MCG. The architecture of the new buildings is rhythmic, delineated by grid-like frames. Within these frames, deep balconies with glass balustrades visually correlate with the floor-to-ceiling glazing, creating a calm and restrained presence.</p>

<p>The interior design for the entire development continues the classical contemporary theme. A neutral base palette of high-quality, natural materials enables residents to tailor their own homes to personal preferences, while still typifying a refined and sophisticated elegance.</p>
