Matt Davis returns to Bates Smart as a Studio Director

“Matt brings an unrivalled knowledge in driving real change towards healthier, more liveable cities.”

Guy Lake

Director, Bates Smart

A prominent influencer of urban policy and projects in Australia, Matt Davis returns to Bates Smart as a Studio Director. Until his return to Sydney, from Adelaide, Matt was a founding partner of Davis+Davis Architects as well as a member of the inaugural SA Planning Commission and Integrated Design Commission of South Australia.

Matt is a member of numerous design review panels including the NSW State Design Review Panel. Acclaimed for his skills in architecture, urban design and planning, he has worked closely with the South Australian and NSW Governments to progress significant urban renewal as a trusted advisor to organisations delivering ambitious policy reform and complex urban projects.

Bates Smart Director, Guy Lake, described Matt as a great asset to the practice. “We are delighted to welcome Matt back to the studio. He brings a wealth of talent and an unrivalled knowledge in driving real change towards healthier, more liveable cities.

A highly regarded design architect within the Bates Smart team from 2002 to 2006, Matt was integral to the winning competition scheme for the 420 George Street tower and MidCity Centre and as design lead on the award-winning Queanbeyan Government Service Centre and 55 Miller Street, Pyrmont.

Commenting on his new role Matt says, “There’s never been a more important time for cities, or more urgent need for our neighbourhoods to be better connected, more sustainable, full of life, and loved by communities. Design offers such a powerful way of creating great places and inspiring collaboration toward more desirable and optimistic futures.”
