Proposed W Hotel, Melbourne
A Homage to our History, Stepping Into the Future

“The project respects the past, embraces the present and provides a new future for the area”

Roger Poole

Chairman, Bates Smart on the proposed W Melbourne

Property developers, Jinshan Investments, recently unveiled plans for a new W Hotel in Melbourne’s business district. The proposed 200 key hotel and residential project will be the flagship development for the regeneration of Melbourne’s parliamentary precinct.

Designed by Bates Smart, the new building exudes contemporary luxury while honouring classic design. It is respectful of the site’s history and engages with the vibrancy of modern Melbourne.

Bates Smart Chairman, Roger Poole commented on the facade design: ‘We studied the layering of buildings of varying scale and character as they form the backdrop to Spring Street. We drew inspiration from the existing vertical expression of surrounding buildings. Simple elegant lines can create depth and interest. Verticality, layering and rich detailing are central to our facade concept.’

Fine screens and bay windows on the podium facade will echo the rhythm of the surrounding buildings. The podium will add amenity to the city, the four tiered flexible space becoming a venue for cultural, hospitality and entertainment venues.

The ground plane is open, and the hotel lobby will become an extension of the street. The development will unlock the laneways around the site, and a new laneway will be designed to pay homage to the eclectic Melbourne laneway heritage, whilst creating an inviting, safe and re-energised precinct. The development is ready to proceed upon planning approval.

Boheme, Bondi Beach, Sydney
Coastal Culture

“We are thrilled with the results and see this building as a catalyst for future quality projects in Bondi”

Allan Vidor

Managing Director, The Toga Group

Boheme, Bondi is fast becoming a destination in this iconic coastal suburb of Sydney. Designed by Bates Smart for The Toga Group, this is a mixed use development offering a combination of 44 luxury apartments, a 113 key Adina hotel and extensive retail areas with basement parking.

The Toga Group's Managing Director, Allan Vidor, comments on the design:

'Bates Smart have skillfully blended the needs of residents, restaurant and hotel guests and shoppers alike, allowing each group to fully enjoy the environment. This is a very successful project for us and we've received overwhelmingly positive comments in reaction to it.'

Bates Smart director, Philip Vivian explains the design intent: 'The building amalgamates four sites with dual street frontage. We designed the podium to incorporate the identity of Bondi’s art deco buildings and colourful streetscapes and to reflect the rhythm and height of the surrounding masonry buildings.

'The residential levels are contained above in a curvaceous form. We carefully refined this mass and set it back from the street to reduce the visual impact on the surrounding area.'

Apartment interiors epitomise the development's name and design philosophy with a colour palette derived from water, sunlight and sand.

The retail promenade forms a through site link and is attracting the best of Sydney’s fresh food providores, delicatessans and restaurants.

The Sebel Pier One Hotel, Sydney
Calm Restraint and Luxury on Sydney Harbour

“There are no other suites in the city that resonate Sydney like the new balcony suites of the Sebel Pier One”

Simon McGrath

CEO of Accor Hotels, Australia

The heady combination of Sydney harbour foreshore and the idiosyncracies of the 1912 former P&O passenger terminal building became an exercise in elegant restraint for Bates Smart at The Sebel Pier One hotel.

27 suites have been given a new life of luxury to further enhance the global Sebel brand. The full beauty of Sydney will greet international travellers with private views of the harbour from every part of the suites. The hotel is located in the heritage listed Pier One fingerwharf with links to the maritime past of the Rocks precinct in Sydney.

Director, Simon Swaney commented:
'While the design celebrates the raw architectural structure of the former shipping fingerwharf, we also wanted to provide a sense of calm restraint and quality and to enhance the experience of the location and the heritage building within which the hotel is contained.

'Architecturally, the new spaces are light, casual, and luxurious. We've combined a natural palette and warm materials to provide spaces that sit comfortably and contextually within the Pier.'

Owner Robert Magid of TMG Developments commented that the completion of the suites brings a period of extensive refurbishments to the hotel to a close and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the property:

'Despite its world famous harbour, Sydney had only a handful of hotels that offer accommodation right on the water and in our case, actually over it, let alone in a building with a century of history behind it.

The new premium suites at The Sebel Pier One offer guests the chance to experience the finest views the city has to offer in a luxurious space that will instantly make them feel at home with its sense of style and comfort.'

The Atrium Bar
Crafting Beauty

The Atrium Bar is an elegant cocktail bar in Crown Towers, Melbourne. Bates Smart were invited to refurbish our orignal design from 15 years ago and to introduce a fresh contemporary aesthetic.

The result is a finely crafted bespoke interior with a lighting scheme that achieves maximum theatricality while using energy efficient LED lighting.

Four Points by Sheraton
Significant Expansion

Sited on Sydney’s historic Darling Harbour,The Four Points by Sheraton is set to receive a substantial expansion and renovation. When unveiled in 2015, the hotel will be Australia’s largest, boasting 913 keys and 4,810 sqm of convention space.

Bates Smart have been commissioned to design the interiors for the public and convention spaces including hotel lobby, restaurant, bar, meeting and function spaces.

Creating a link between the significant sandstone heritage buildings of the site and the marine harbour activity has been key to the planning and design process.

An expansive interior courtyard terrace  will create hospitable spaces to arrive, conduct business and to relax and enjoy this unique location. Sandstone blade walls and architectural voids will create a strong visual connection between the traditional hotel spaces on the ground floor and the convention facility on the floor above.

The restaurant and bar spaces will be relaxed and welcoming. The restaurant will offer a range of dining experiences and is orientated to harbor views, evoking the mood of a breezy, garden terrace. By contrast, the bar will create a warm and intimate mood with a soft boundary to its adjacent lobby lounge.
