New Bendigo Hospital, Victoria
Where Building and Landscape are One

“Our goal is a significant civic building with Bendigo's social & cultural wellbeing in mind”

Tim Leslie

Studio Director, Bates Smart

The $630 million Bendigo Hospital project will be the largest regional hospital development in Victoria, incorporating the latest design and technology solutions.

Bates Smart Studio Director, Tim Leslie, talks about the project:

'The project has given us an exciting opportunity to design a world-class regional hospital in one of the State’s most environmentally sustainable settings.

'The design will provide a clearly definable hospital precinct which celebrates its history and consolidates existing programmes to allow future expansion. The project takes its cues from Bendigo’s architectural vernacular and natural context and unites them with a holistic approach to health care.

'We have approached the design of the new hospital building and the landscape as an integrated whole. The built form reaches out and frames its garden setting, while the landscape is drawn in to create sanctuaries of tranquillity.

'Our goal has been the creation of a significant civic building which promotes health not only on a physical level but with Bendigo’s social and cultural wellbeing in mind.'

The new hospital is due for completion at the end of 2016 and is a public private partnership between the Exemplar consortium with Department of Health Victoria.

Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Sydney
Showcasing the Legal Workplace of the Future

“The organisation has been energised by the whole move, by the connection, by the light, it has been a wonderful experience.”

Robert Regan, Partner

Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Lawyers Weekly

Corrs Chambers Westgarth’s progressive new Sydney office at 8 Chifley is complete. The innovative design is the first fully open and flexible office environment designed for a major law firm in Australia.

Won by design competition, the project provided Bates Smart's specialised workplace team with the opportunity to develop a future workplace concept aligned with Corrs strategic vision.

Bates Smart Studio Director, Brenton Smith, commented: 'Bates Smart assisted Corrs through a change process to support a more flexible and mobile environment. A series of workshops was run with partners and teams within Corrs to gain a full understanding of their work practices and to investigate how the workplace could assist them in reaching their vision.'

The result sees Corrs lawyers, including partners, forgo their traditional offices in favour of an open layout shared with executive assistants and junior lawyers in a series of dynamic 'vertical villages'.

Work stations are uniform throughout, enabling full flexibility in terms of staff and partner locations. Storage is established in hierarchies to ensure ready access to those who need it. Hospitality spaces are second to none and the breakouts on each village floor become the centre for team activities.

Director Simon Swaney commented: 'A new standard in legal workplaces has been set with the fitout at 8 Chifley. The design and fitout offers Corrs incredible flexibility and will change the way they align themselves with their clients and other service professionals.'

Parramatta Square Design Competition Stages 5 & 6

Philip Vivian

Director, Bates Smart

The Parramatta Square Development Stages 5 and 6 will encompass two new commercial office towers.

A recent international design competition saw the Bates Smart team shortlisted to the final 4 from 77 entries for this development stage. Philip Vivian comments on the team's approach:

'Parramatta Square is the city’s greatest urban redevelopment opportunity. We are interested in the potential for these buildings to contribute to the public life of Parramatta Square, with a fine grain of laneways and public spaces.

A collection of iconic buildings will not make Parramatta Square a vibrant place. We are interested in the spaces between buildings - the spaces people inhabit.'

The design competition continues with the final four submitting a second stage entry in mid December.
