Mark Healey
Studio Director
BA, BDes (Interior Architecture)

Born in Auckland New Zealand, Mark completed his Bachelor Degree in Interior Architecture at the School of Architecture and Design, Wellington. Graduating in 1997 he established his own Studio and completed a number of significant small hospitality projects in Wellington, NZ.

He relocated to Melbourne and was successful in securing the lead design role at Metier3 Architects for the new University of Melbourne Law School, part of the University Square Development. On completion of that project Mark joined Bates Smart Melbourne in 2003 and has since become an integral member of the senior design team working closely with Director, Jeff Copolov.

Mark spent many of his early years in the company working overseas on large scale hospitality projects in the UK and Asia.

On return Mark was presented with the opportunity to take over the lead interior design role on the award-winning Royal Children’s Hospital, the world leading paediatric hospital situated in Parkville. Mark led a large team and saw this project through to completion.

Mark has since has been involved in a number of high quality healthcare, multi-residential, civic and commercial developments, including Bates Smart’s winning submission for the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C.

He has demonstrated consistently through his work in the healthcare and institutional sectors his ability to deliver high quality and coherent design solutions to complex briefs.

Marks passion is providing spaces for clients to thrive and grow. He believes a designer’s core role is to utilise the positive qualities of nature to create empathetic human centric spaces we want to inhabit.

Mark is an active member of the Design Institute of Australia and alumni of the Committee for Melbourne’s leadership program the Future Focus Group.
