Rachael McCarthy
Studio Director
B Interior Arch (Hons)

Rachael is a senior interior designer and Studio Director who joined Bates Smart after returning from London where she gained experience in a lead design and client relationship role, on a number of large, highly publicised fitouts. These included legal and banking fitouts for international clients ranging from 40,000-75,000sqm. Her design skills and experience on large complex CBD projects make her an invaluable asset to Bates Smart.

Rachael’s expertise lies in managing the strategic briefing, design and client liaison aspects of projects. Her ability to effectively engage and manage large stakeholder groups is key during the critical briefing phase, engendering a positive approach to change throughout the duration of the project. Her communication and team management skills have contributed to her success in leading the team through complex design challenges and realising the client’s vision within the parameters of budget and program.

Rachael has worked across a diverse range of projects including briefing for private and government workplaces, and the multi-award winning new Royal Children’s Hospital; a refurbishment of a heritage building to create the new Post Graduate Student Centre for the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne; briefing and project leading the new Members Grandstand for the Victorian Racing Club at Flemington Racecourse and the Redevelopment Masterplan for the Docklands Film and Television Studio. This breadth of experience has enabled Rachael to develop a deep understanding of the significant issues and subtle nuances that differentiate one genre from another, and which are to be explored and creatively resolved in each project.
