Matt joined Bates Smart in 2009 after returning to Australia from London, where he worked as an architect for seven years. He was made an Associate in 2010, Associate Director in 2012, a Studio Director in 2014 and a Director in 2017.
Matt’s portfolio includes award-winning projects across many sectors including residential, student housing, civic, hotel, and mixed-use schemes. He has had great success leading competition wins to realisation, acting as design leader for UNSW Kensington Colleges and the Canberra Airport Hotel. Recently, Matt has established particular expertise in large complex residential masterplanning projects. He is currently leading the design and delivery of the Newmarket precinct in Randwick, and the mixed tenure masterplan for Ivanhoe in Macquarie Park.
Within Bates Smart, Matt has a leading role in shaping research and development of the technology team. This is guided by a personal interest in how new technologies such as virtual and augmented reality can be harnessed to better present, review, and improve our design work.
