Hub Parliament, Melbourne
ICI House, 1 Nicholson Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Hub Australia provides a premium, flexible co-working platform to growing businesses. The workplace environment is designed to foster community and culture, equipped with serviced meeting rooms, private office spaces, collaborative hubs, member amenities, and a strong focus on hospitality.
Bates Smart were engaged to design Hub’s latest Melbourne venture, occupying the top three floors of Orica House (ICI House), originally designed by Bates Smart + McCutcheon (1958). The planning was informed by the base build architectural grid to maximise efficiency across each floorplate, achieving a density of 5.5 sqm per person.
All private member offices are positioned on the building perimeter, close to natural light with outward facing views to the parklands and city. The workzone spine runs centrally through each floor, made up of a series of flexible, open-plan workspaces, breakout zones and dedicated rooms, tailored to suit the different workstyles of each business or individual.
Aesthetically, the design pays homage to the era of the building’s completion, referencing key mid-century ideas and notions such as honesty and authenticity, geometry, scale, texture, light and nature.
