Government Agency, Sydney
259 George Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Bates Smart was engaged to design a new workplace for a NSW Government Agency at 259 George Street. The brief called for an evolution of design implemented at the corresponding 105 Phillip site to suit the government team and context of 259 George Street - a 1980s Brutalist building.
The design celebrates the existing building structure and finishes. The angular geometry of the building is reflected in design details through chamfers and ribbing and built zones are designed as freestanding elements to sit below the exposed concrete beams.
The use of a modest, non-ostentatious palette has been used in innovative ways and complement elements of the architectural finishes.
The layout was designed with built zones constructed around core areas and services risers allowing staff the best access to natural light in addition to a variety of different work environments from private lounge settings to screened off group huddle zones. Client areas are integrated with staff breakout areas, creating a hospitality environment for all.
