Munro Site, Queen Victoria Market
CBD, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
The Queen Victoria Market is a much-loved place with great social, historical, and cultural importance for the city of Melbourne.
The QVM tower is a Build-To-Rent residential address that is inspired by the market and the ever changing array of events, fresh food vendors, performances and stalls. The design celebrates the location, whilst creating a residential address that is a global exemplar for energy efficiency, targeting 5 star green star certification and an 8 star Nathers rating.
The tower makes the most of its location on the northern edge of the city grid, providing uninterrupted views across the market towards Flagstaff Gardens and the newly created ‘Market Square’ public park, which replaces the current open air car park.
The evocative soft tower form has been designed to maximise direct solar access and to provide natural ventilation to all apartments, thereby creating a model for high quality inner-city living within Melbourne.
The building’s façade is inspired by the fine grain texture of the market’s historic sheds and stalls and is designed to position the tower within its context, providing a deep connection to place.
Inspired by the idea of stacked garden boxes, the central north and south facing recesses of the building will be planted with cascading greenery, allowing residents on any floor leafy views out of the building, while creating a living, breathing architecture that celebrates sustainability and contributes to making Melbourne a healthier city.
