Harbourfront Balmain, Sydney
Balmain, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Harbourfront Balmain introduces residences, serviced apartments, commercial space and a public park to the Iron Cove foreshore. The mixed-use development respects the surrounding neighbourhood through its architectural expression and sensitive treatment of public space, landscape and access.
It was essential that the project blend with Balmain’s distinctive character, maintain neighbours’ water views and create new connections to the foreshore. Achieving this goal meant rethinking previous proposals. The design team used parametric software to analyse views, refine the massing and break up the buildings to increase public greenspace and connections throughout the site.
The design addresses the development’s three frontages by pushing buildings to the site edges, allowing each a distinct expression responding to the immediate context. Between the buildings, pedestrian links create permeability from the top of the site to the foreshore park. Mature trees and ground cover occupy 42% of the site, further blending the development into the neighbourhood.
