Hyatt Regency Sydney
Darling Harbour, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Bates Smart was engaged to undertake the masterplan and interior design for the renovation and expansion of the Hyatt Regency Sydney, sited on historic Darling Harbour. Our objective was to create hospitality spaces which optimise the considerable assets of the site, while minimising structural limitations imposed by the existing architecture.
Undertaking the initial Masterplanning stage, we sought to achieve the best possible connectivity between public space and back-of-house support to create operational efficiencies and seamless transitions. The interior design that followed encompassed the arrival lobby, restaurant and lobby bar, and meeting and convention spaces, optimising views to Darling Harbour.
Creating a link between the significant sandstone heritage buildings of the site and the marine harbour activity was key, creating a contemporary, enlivened hospitality experience. Designed as an expansive courtyard terrace, the interior creates uplifting spaces to arrive, conduct business and relax and enjoy this unique location. Sandstone blade walls and architectural voids make a strong visual connection between the traditional hotel on the ground floor and the convention facility above.
The restaurant and bar are relaxed, creating an activated, decorative backdrop, complimentary to the hotel lobby experience, where a series of screened rooms offer a range of dining experiences. Orientated to harbour views, the restaurant evokes the mood of a sunlit, terrace, featuring an interior garden wall. By contrast, the bar, with full height woven nautical rope screen enclosure create a warm and intimate mood with a soft boundary to its adjacent lobby lounge.
The impressive scale and proportion of the new ballroom is complimented by expansive views and abundant natural light.
