Iglu King Street
407-415 King Street, West Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Iglu King Street is a student accommodation building that incorporates Flagstaff House and a new tower. The heritage listed Flagstaff House is to be retained and its façade carefully restored. It will form the base to the new 16-storey tower that will accommodate 362 students in a range of accommodation types including 6-bed apartments, studios and twin studios designed to maximise amenity. The tower has been set back from the heritage building and symmetrically positioned above it so that the original building is read as the base to the ensemble. The design and materiality of the proposed tower is responsive and deferential to the ‘Modernist’ style architecture of the heritage building below.
The floors within the existing building (Lower Ground - Level 2) are connected by an atrium and open stair, and accommodate a range of generous communal and recreation facilities. In addition to communal space, the lower ground floor level also accommodates bicycle storage and back of house services.
The building incorporates a rainwater collection system, a biophilic façade, high performance envelope and glazing and makes extensive use of PV panels.
