Bates Smart has designed an eight-storey, 98-bed student accommodation facility in Regent Street, Chippendale, within close proximity to the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Sydney and the University of Notre Dame.

The building maximises the allowable height and sits well within the existing streetscape. The corner to Regent and Dwyer Streets is cut away, providing a strong entry statement and in keeping with the corner features of the surrounding heritage buildings.

The building has a cor-ten steel skin with a warm natural patina consistent in colour with the surrounding masonry facades.

An L-shaped plan has been utilised, which maximises street frontage and the northern aspect. Along with neighbouring buildings, the inner walls define the edges of a communal landscaped courtyard.

The ground floor accommodates internal and external social spaces designed to encourage a sense of community. A shared laundry forms part of the communal space fronting Dwyer Street. There is direct access from the internal communal area into the outdoor courtyard, and a covered outdoor dining and BBQ facility.

Typical floors contain two six-bed cluster apartments in each wing on the ‘L’, and two studios at the corner of the plan. Each apartment has a communal living / dining area with full kitchen facilities. Studios have their own kitchenette.

Over half of the bedrooms are orientated towards the internal courtyard to maximise acoustic and visual privacy, while both the studios and the communal living areas are located on street frontages and have a north or north-easterly aspect.
