Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
University of Sydney, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Our vision for the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) was to create a building that simultaneously embraces the past and the future.

Based on the University’s courtyard typology, the faculty building design integrates seamlessly into the historic campus. The courtyard is reinterpreted as an active ‘social heart’, a communal space that encourages social interaction and serendipitous encounters. The outer facade is a contemporary interpretation of the original sandstone buildings.

The design concept embraces the historic RD Watt building, without compromising its heritage setting and views—while opening up and engaging with the campus in an inviting gesture.

The floorplate is highly flexible and adaptable to a variety of working styles. The layout has a series of layered zones which increase in their privacy from a highly active and collaborative social heart, through to an intermediate semi-private zone for HDRs, with perimeter offices for focused concentration and privacy.

The new FASS building provides a contemporary and world-class educational building benefiting not only its students and staff, but also the wider community.
