Charles Darwin University School of Business
Ellengowan Drive, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

Bates Smart were engaged to design a new School of Business for Charles Darwin University offering superior teaching and learning facilities, and establishing a city presence for the university in Darwin.

The design of the new campus pivots around a ‘learning commons’ – a series of individual social and learning spaces connected continuously throughout the building.

The waterfront city campus also comprises several integrated working spaces to support the Business School, including academic staff and student offices, executive offices, a gallery, cafe and a function space.

The success of the building was dependent on the creation of a strong brand identity and collegiate atmosphere, which united a wide range of users from undergraduates, academics and professorial staff to industry partners.

The design vision was underpinned by three design concepts; duality, classic detailing reinterpreted, and a timeless base building. Combined together, these three concepts created an overall visual identity for the school and a strong palette of materials that can be adapted to all user groups.
