NSW Government Service Centre
Queanbeyan, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia
The NSW Government Service Centre in Queanbeyan is the first of a proposed series of multi-agency facilities in NSW providing a one-stop-shop for people doing business with government.
The design consists of a completely open, flexible floor-plate with two cores located at opposing ends. Adjacent to each core are naturally ventilated breakout spaces and meeting rooms. The ground floor contains an Information Resource Centre – a central access point for all of the agencies, as well as a number of specific agency ‘shop fronts’, accessed from a colonnade along Farrer Place.
The architectural expression draws on the historic context of Queanbeyan: the strong roof, deep overhangs, fine sunshading, and natural materials recall the Showground buildings and verandas along Monaro Street, Queanbeyan’s main street. The dramatic entry court presents a striking contemporary identity for the Centre.
