Bates Smart provided design services for the refurbishment of 70 Castlereagh Street Sydney, located on the highly visible corner of King and Castlereagh Street, in the heart of the city’s legal and luxury retail precinct.
The proposal included the re-cladding of the tower facade to King and Castlereagh Street, the upgrade of ground floor entry lobby finishes and a new two level shop fitout for leading luxury goods retailer Chanel. Bates Smart worked closely with Chanel to integrate the new tower facade with the new Chanel boutique, designed by New York based architect Peter Marino.
The proposal to wrap the existing building with a transparent glass facade significantly improves the environmental performance of the building, while repositioning the it to reflect the calibre of its tenants and prime location within the city.
The proposed over-cladding construction method, developed in association with Arup Facades, maximises the reuse of the existing facade structure—which allowed tenants to remain within the building during construction.
