Eighteen years of leadership

After eighteen years at Bates Smart, including eight years as Managing Director, Simon Swaney will formally retire from the role on 30 June 2022. Simon will continue to work with Bates Smart as a consultant, to finalise projects and assist with a smooth transition amongst the Leadership group.

Simon joined the practice in 2004, with a focus on assisting the relatively young Sydney studio in their formative years. Since then, the Sydney studio has grown in strength and structure to a similar size as the Melbourne studio. Simon’s stewardship has been fundamental in uniting these two large studios as one successful business with projects throughout Australia and overseas.

In the Managing Director role, Simon’s passion for business improvement saw him instigate a range of internal advancements – succession planning, structured career development, gender equality and design technology – all of which will continue to positively impact our people and our client’s projects.

Simon’s depth of industry relationships is particularly admired. He has led countless major projects over the years from commercial to residential, hospitality and workplace. A problem solver, a client collaborator and a truly likeable person – Simon will be well missed.

In looking to the future, the practice will continue to be led by the current Director group, with Philip Vivian taking the role of Managing Director. Philip joined Bates Smart in 1994, launched the Sydney office in 1997 and became a Director in 2000. Philip has been instrumental in driving many of our landmark award-winning projects, thought leadership and design advocacy, as well as internal initiatives including gender equality, Indigenous acknowledgement and our Net Zero Carbon policy.

Philip and the Bates Smart Directors thank Simon and congratulate him on his significant contribution to the business, wishing him the best with his future endeavours.
